Be Inspired!, Motivate Yourself!

How to Make Your Resolutions Stick

Each year, people start out very optimistic and set fantastic goals they want to accomplish in the new year. Some people are very successful with it,  but the majority are unsuccessful in their endeavors. In this post, I will share with you tips for being one of the successful ones this year.

Be clear

When you set a goal like ‘lose X amount of pounds’ , a lot of people don’t have anything to back it up with. What I mean is they have that goal of losing weight but they don’t have a plan or details on how they’re going to do it. Be clear in your goal setting by stating ‘I want to lose X amount of pounds by walking 3 times a week and eating more fresh foods’.

Give a time frame

If you just say ‘I want to lose X amount of pounds this year’, in a way you set yourself up for failure. If you have the entire year to lose that weight, what’s going to motivate to do the necessary things? What’s going to keep you from procrastinating? It helps if you set up a time frame that you want to lose this weight in. So say “I want to lose 10 pounds by March 1st” instead of “I want to lose 10 pounds this year”.

Be reasonable

Another mistake people make is they set unrealistic goals. If you have never run a day in your life, it would be unrealistic to try and run a marathon in February. In order to be realistic with your goals you do need to know your limits.
If you set a goal such as running a marathon in February when you’ve never run before, you’re just going to get incredibly discouraged by the lack of progress for that lofty goal. Instead, start out with “I want to run a mile by February” . For many people that right there is very difficult but not impossible.

Give details

This falls in line with being clear about your goals. Give details on what you’re going to do to accomplish your goal. This is where you get specific about everything. The more details the better.
By providing more details, it shows that you are serious about whatever it is you want to do and are thinking of ways to accomplish it. This way, when it gets rough, you’ll have something to fall back on. You can look at the details you provided and it may give you that extra boost you need to continue on.

SMART goal setting

I’m a big advocate of SMART goal setting, if you are unfamiliar with that, you can check out the post I linked to. It gives you an outline to fill in your goals and provide all the details needed. By using these tips, and the outline provided in the SMART goal setting post, I believe you’ll be able to accomplish any goal you set your mind to.

I wish you the best of luck with your resolution this year! Let me know how it’s going, I really am curious to find out what works for people.
